Antimetabolite and Cytotoxic
In large doses, Trexate tablets are indicated for the treatment of breast cancer, chorioadenoma destruens, gestational choriocarcinoma, and the palliation of acute and subacute lymphocytic leukaemia.
In combination with corticosteroids, Trexate tablets may be used for induction of remission.
Trexate tablets are also effective in the treatment of the advanced states (III and IV, Peters Staging System) of lymphosarcoma, particularly in children and in advanced cases of mycosis fungoides.
In smaller doses, Trexate tablets are indicated for the treatment of severe psoriasis once a diagnosis has been established, as by biopsy and/or other dermatologic consultations.
Trexate, PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE. The active ingredient in each Trexate tablet contains either 2.5 mg or 10 mg of Methotrexate. Both strengths are provided in packs of 90 tablets.
Trexate tablets contain methotrexate which is an anti-metabolite (medicine which affects how the body’s cells grow) and is also an immunosuppressant (medicine which reduces the activity of the immune system). Methotrexate is used in large doses (on its own or in combination with other medicines) to treat certain types of cancer such as leukaemia or lymphomas. In smaller doses, it can be used to treat severe psoriasis (a skin disease with thickened patches of inflamed red skin, often covered by silvery scales).
Trexate tablets have risks and benefits. Do not use Trexate tablets if you are allergic to methotrexate or any of the other ingredients of Trexate tablets. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including any medicines obtained without a prescription from your pharmacy, health store or supermarket.
Always use these tablets exactly as your doctor has instructed you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. During treatment, you should watch for any side effects and report them to your doctor. Discuss with your doctor if you have any concerns.
Trexate tablets are fully funded. Standard doctor’s fees and pharmacy charges apply.
